Growing Minds Need Pencils to Write!

My students need a midyear restock of basic essential supplies for rigorous learning.

My Students

My students are a group of 4th and 5th graders in a Title I school in Harlem, whose resilience and thirst for knowledge impresses me everyday. Despite the adversities they face, they are enthusiastic about learning and curious about the world!

However, the majority are significantly behind academically.

Currently, only 30% are reading at or above grade level. Of the 70% reading below grade level, the majority are reading at a 1st-2nd grade level, while the rest are reading a year behind. Over 90% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch.

My Project

It is that time of the year when writing supplies are running low due to how much my students are learning and writing. We would like to restock on some supplies we desperately need. As an ELA teacher of 74 students, I haven't captured the pencil troll yet, so as you can imagine, pencils are much needed. We also need some creative thinking supplies like dry erase markers. Finally, we had our trusty pencil sharpener for years and sadly it stopped working so we would like one that will last longer and work better. These supplies would further push my students thinking, engagement and output.
