This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Engaging pre-k students in a sponsored gardening experience, where they grow their own individual tomato plants and chart their growth, offers a multitude of benefits that align with both the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the Creative Curriculum's garden unit.
First, such an experience fosters hands-on learning, allowing students to actively participate in the entire process of planting, caring for, and observing the growth of their tomato plants.
This hands-on approach promotes sensory exploration and enhances their understanding of natural processes.
Furthermore, through gardening, students develop a sense of responsibility as they learn to nurture and care for their plants. They gain an appreciation for the environment and the importance of sustainability as they witness firsthand the impact of their actions on the growth of their tomato plants.
Moreover, the sponsored gardening experience provides ample opportunities for interdisciplinary learning. Students can explore various subjects such as science, math, and language arts through activities like measuring plant growth, counting leaves or flowers, and journaling about their observations.
Additionally, the gardening experience complements the Creative Curriculum's garden unit by providing a real-world context for learning. It allows students to apply the concepts and skills they learn in the classroom to a meaningful and practical setting, fostering deeper understanding and engagement.
Overall, a sponsored gardening experience offers pre-k students a rich and holistic learning opportunity that not only aligns with academic standards, but also promotes social, emotional, and cognitive development. By growing their own tomato plants and charting their growth,, students gain valuable skills and knowledge while cultivating a lifelong love for nature and learning.
