Our public, Title I school serves a diverse local community with a growing immigrant and refugee population by employing the Montessori method. My classroom consists of 26 first, second, and third grade students who work hard and support one another.
My students are compassionate and eager to learn about the world around them.
Unfortunately, most of our students have not had the experience of growing plants at home. They love having the responsibility of caring for our indoor classroom plants or nurturing the oak seedlings we are growing for a local program.
My Project
Our classroom garden will have many positive impacts. Students will be able to learn and appreciate how food is grown. Harvesting and preparing ingredients will allow them the chance to expand their pallets.
Our garden will support studies of plant structures, life cycles, food chains, nutrition, seasons, and so much more.
Beyond academics, students will take ownership of our garden and take pride in the responsibility of caring for the plants. It will offer a sense of purpose.
Additionally, the garden beds will beautify our outdoor learning space. The garden beds requested can be wheeled into secure locations overnight and back out during the day to soak up sunshine and provide my students a pleasant outdoor environment to work in.
