Growing Kinders

We are studying plant and butterfly life cycles. My students need a place to plant as well as a place to observe these cycles. The beds and seeds will provide this.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The little people in my class love science explorations! They love getting messy and discovering how things work. We are readers, writers, and mathematicians, as well as scientists, but most of all we are adventurers.

My student population is very diverse; we have students from all over the world.

Over half of my class are ESOL students and are considered "impoverished" and "at risk." We are a Title I school, with more than fifty percent of our population receiving a free or reduced lunch. Many come from families who can not afford school supplies. Of course, these labels mean nothing to my little people yet, and they are wonderful, energetic, and eager to learn and explore, just like any other five year old. With the increased expectations in reading and writing, they are starting out already behind, since most of them have not had any preschool or academic exposure. Most adults would get discouraged at the prospect of having to meet such high expectations with so little preparation, but five year olds are wonderful in that they know that they can do anything they set their minds to, with the right inspiration.

My Project

Our Science curriculum goals state that Kindergarteners will observe, describe and write about plant and animal life cycles. I want to go beyond planting a seed in a cup and extend their learning beyond the classroom to the outside world. We usually order butterfly larvae and watch butterflies hatch and then release them. I would like for my students to see the connection between the plants they grow and the butterflies that will attract and pollinate them. These beds will be able to be used year after year and will provide opportunities for exploration for years to come.

My students will love gardening.

They will be able to plant each seed, watch it sprout, grow, and attract butterflies. They will be able to search for butterfly eggs, watch butterflies feed and pollinate, and see these butterflies hatch from chrysalis. These gardening beds will give them the opportunity to feel a sense of pride and ownership, as well as an understanding of the wonder of how things grow, just like they do!
