Growing into the New Normal

Help me give my students new gloves and shears! Our garden is completely overgrown and full of weeds. Due to the pandemic, no one was able to nurture and care for it.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is and always has been a room for personal growth. I currently teach students 7 periods of various courses with many students. Their ages range from 14-19. My homeroom class are our current seniors in the unit. Besides being the English/LA teacher, I also teach communication skills, community-based instruction, daily living skills, social/emotional skills, and independent functioning. Everyone in my classroom has Autism Spectrum Disorder. A few have multiple disorders/diagnosis. The setting is a self-contained class, so I see many of the students multiple times of the day. I have had the privilege to work with my students year after year! I have moved along with them and have been able to witness their academic and personal growths.

My Project

Our garden provides more than just a hobby for our class. Not only do the students learn gardening skills, they have the opportunity to invest their time into something and reap the rewards. The students set seeds for vegetables, herbs and sunflowers. Everything that grows, we then use the product to cook healthy meals. This carries over into their independent functioning and daily living skills work. Having a garden serves many purposes for us. They are able to maintain a healthy lifestyle while in school. They get physical activity from working in the garden. It promotes positive social skills by allowing them to interact with one another as well as other students and adults on the school campus who may want to ask them questions. Working in the garden also helps calm emotions and increases positive behaviors since the students are able to relax and feel empowered. Since the pandemic, schools have JUST reopened since March. Needless to say, our garden needs much tender-loving care! Everyone needs something right now that will promote communication, stress relief and a healthy lifestyle. Help us clean out our garden and start fresh!
