This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
RHS is in it's first year of having a Cluster Program that consists of 2 special education life skills classrooms of 10 students each who range in age from 14-16 years. The teachers teach functional academics, vocational training, and social skills all to prepare the students for a happy and successful post secondary education life.
The students all have disabilities that include Autism, Down Syndrome, and other various mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.
RHS is located in the Albany Park neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. Albany Park is considered the most diverse of all Chicago neighborhoods. Roosevelt High School is 94% low income and its graduation rate is 81%. The student body is diverse and includes 73% Hispanic, 13% black, 7% Asian and 5% white.
My Project
Our goal is to make sure that our students are getting what they need for a high quality education. In a self contained special education classroom, visuals and interactive activities are essential to maximize individualized learning. Learning should be fun, colorful and relevant. We want our students to have flexible seating so they can make choices in the classroom that are best for their brain and body. Making sure our students are safe and comfortable in the space where they learn is essential for motivating them to grow academically and to produce their best work. Our curriculum plan is highly individualized to their specific goals and areas of need- their seating option should be too!
Our goal each day is to create as many lessons and opportunities to be successful both inside our classrooms, and outside the room whether in the general education setting or in the community.
Classroom supplies, such as binders, folders and dry erase markers, will be used to keep our students' work organized. Math manipulatives are essential for tactile learning. The laminators ensure that our materials can be used over and over again, to give our students repetition and interactive learning. A large Judy Clock will help organize the student's concept of time. Paddles will help students engage in a fun way during their lessons. Lastly is the importance of providing functional academics. The request for a microwave and refrigerator is important so that we can incorporate simple cooking life skills into some curriculum.
