Growing in Physics: Helping English Language Learners Develop Sustainability Skills
Help me give my students a worm bin for vermicomposting, and a watering can to help care for our community garden.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Ryan's classroom raised $333

My Project
I am seeking funding to finance a worm bin so we can start vermicomposting and a watering can that will be used in our community garden as part of an Energy Production unit in high school physics. We will grow fruits and vegetables from around the world and students will learn plant care as well as sustainability. The worm bin will ensure that we always have nutrient-rich soil for the plants we will grow.
We are going to use the worm bin to compost organic materials and matter, providing us with nutrient-rich soil.
The worm bin is vital to our operation and will help keep future costs down so that we don't need to continue to buy soil, and nutrients to feed our soil and plants.
We are learning about plants in a physics class during our Energy Production unit. We have a large English Language Learner population. Students have expressed their longing for their home country. It is my hope that we can bring some of their home country into the classroom to make them feel more comfortable and excited to learn.
Students will gain skills by growing and harvesting their own food, but most importantly, they will feel a connection to their produce. This is going to help build student confidence and happiness. Having a project where students get to enjoy the "fruits of their labor" is an incredibly fulfilling feeling. Students glow with excitement as they pick vegetables from our community garden. Having a garden inside the classroom will allow us to bring that excitement inside, year-round.
