Growing Green STEMs From Our Solar Powered Hydroponic Garden!

My students need materials to construct a self-watering garden system powered by solar energy that maximizes space by creating a vertical garden to complement the school's existing raised bed garden.

My Students

"I didn't know I liked salad!" is repeated time and time again as our young gardeners eat a salad made from the ingredients they grew. "Club Green Thumb" is comprised of curious students who actively investigate problems and implement solutions. Our young 1-3 grade gardeners are supported by students leaders in grades 4-7. Together, this group of students uses their passion for growing to maintain a school garden that has been in place for 10 years.

Our school takes its STEM focus seriously and offers before, during, and after school opportunities for its over 1,000 K-8th grade students to ask questions, imagine possibilities, and create plans to improve their world.

Students are eager to prove that believing is seeing and that what can be imagined can be planned and implemented. Since beginning the garden in 2007, hundreds of students have participated in this after school STEM club. Many students have taken what they have learned in the club and set up gardens at their homes.

My Project

Students will learn about different ways to garden in urban areas where space may be limited. This hands-on STEM project will teach our curious young gardeners about renewable energy and sustainable farming. They will be challenged to use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics when planning and implementing solutions to produce healthy food.

Your generous donations to this project will enable my students to plan and construct a closed system vertical hydroponic garden.

Club Green Thumb has maintained a raised be garden for 10 years. The space it occupies is significant. This project will not only introduce an alternative way to grow healthy produce, it will also show students how to utilize existing space when it is limited.

Students will compare, contrast, and categorize vegetables grown from both a soil-based garden and a water-based garden. They will weigh, measure, and taste produce from both systems. They will be asked to draw conclusions about the data collected. Additionally, students will be asked to solve problems that may occur in both growing systems. They will implement their solutions and judge their effectiveness. This project will encourage children to use a more complex level of reasoning and critical thinking, giving them a deeper understanding of the information they gain.
