Growing Gardeners to FEED USA

My students need an in-class gardening set to investigate plant growth and encourage healthy eating habits year-round.

My Students

Establishing healthy eating habits is crucial in a child's life. My students often balk at the idea of eating fresh fruits and vegetables instead of chips and candy. Through the use of gardening in the classroom, I hope to encourage healthy eating habits while simultaneously studying plant growth.

I teach fifth grade in a small, rural school.

My current classroom has a population of 26 students who are eager to learn. Many love the subject of Science and are eager to grow in their scientific knowledge. Several of the students come from lower socioeconomic households and have limited experiences outside of the school setting. My proposal seeks to integrate gardening into the daily classroom experience, as students observe plant growth year-round and enjoy tasting the "fruits of their labor" as harvest time arrives.

My Project

Although my school is in a rural area, many of my students would rather have potato chips or candy bars as snacks instead of fresh fruits and vegetables. Through using gardening in the classroom, not only will my students increase their knowledge and understanding of plant growth, I will also be supporting the efforts of FEED USA to educate students about healthy eating habits. Obesity in the United States is at an all time high, and children in the Southeast consume more high fat, fried foods than in any other region. This project seeks to improve students' understanding of how easy gardening can be and how tasty the results really are!
