Growing Future Leaders: A Hydroponic Grow Tower for Our Classroom!

My Project

Imagine a classroom where young minds aren’t just studying science—they’re living it. At Midvale Elementary, our 5th grade students are eager to take on the challenge of hands-on learning through a hydroponic grow tower. This innovative project will not only teach them about plant biology and sustainability but also help them grow into compassionate, globally-minded citizens by allowing them to support their local community.

With this hydroponic grow tower, our students will explore plant growth both inside our classroom and outside in the garden.

They’ll compare traditional soil-based growth with hydroponic methods, analyzing data and observing differences in plant health, growth rate, and yield. This aligns perfectly with Georgia state standards in STEM, math, and science, as well as the International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy, which encourages inquiry-based learning, global citizenship, and community service. Our classroom’s goal is to apply learning to real-world challenges and empower students to think critically and compassionately.

Our Classroom’s Vision:

After cultivating and harvesting the produce from the grow tower, students will be able to engage in a meaningful philanthropic project: selling the fresh herbs and greens at our local farmers market to raise funds for our community food bank. This allows them to see their work come full circle—from seed to solution—as they learn about the impact they can have on their community.

Funding this project means providing a high-quality hydroponic grow tower that allows our students to cultivate multiple crops simultaneously. This setup will be fully accessible in our classroom, giving all students—no matter the weather or season—a chance to work hands-on with plants daily. This grow tower will make sustainable gardening possible within our classroom walls, offering learning experiences that a traditional outdoor garden simply can’t provide.
