Growing Food in the City!

Help me give my students a hydroponics wall unit for growing veggies in our cafeteria!

My Students

I teach at a specialized math and science high school in New York City. Students must take an entrance exam even though it is a public school. The students of my school are so inquisitive, and have such a drive to learn. This is evident when looking at their full schedules and packed after school activities. These are some of the best and brightest students in all of New York City, and they make going to work every day a JOY!

My Project

Over the last 10 year the Environmental Club, in conjunction with the administration, has tried to foster a more environmentally conscience student body in our school. The students have created recycling and composting programs, run a large Earth Day Event every year, organize volunteer events around the city as well as work to educate the student body on actions they can take to make a difference. We also started a rooftop garden to grow vegetables and flowers, which we had intended to be used in our cafeteria. However due to the limited size and seasons of the region, we have had limited success - both in student access to the roof and the amount of vegetables that make it to the cafeteria.

But what if we could grow the vegetables in the cafeteria all year long?

Not only would more students have access to the area in which the plants are - but we could vastly increase the vegetables for use by the cafeteria staff! In addition to growing food where the entire student body can observe as well as consume, with the research on nutrition, students would be able to create experiments to determine the best combination of nutrients for different food sources!

It is for all of these reasons I am asking for your help to purchase this hydroponics grow wall.
