My Students
I have an amazing group of seventh and eighth graders in a Title 1 Charter School in Arizona. I teach a tremendously diverse group of students, many of whom face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school and deserve only the best that I can give them. I am constantly reflecting upon my practice and desiring to give them the best opportunities to learn and grow.
My students are my kids.
I believe that in providing for my students basic needs, my students will be more capable of learning. In following Maslow's hierarchy of needs, they must have their basic needs met, they must feel safe, they must know they are cared for and loved. As those basic needs are met, they will grow in confidence and esteem. I hope to utilize DonorChoose to help ease the financial burden that is often faced when meeting the basic needs of our students. Thank you for taking the time to check out my project!
My Project
Based upon an article that our team read via the NPR (http://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2015/07/10/419202925/the-writing-assignment-that-changes-lives), this project would enable our students to have a chance to express themselves in writing aside from the standards-based informative/expository and argumentative essays in our classes. They would be able to reflect upon their learning and freely write about their goals and dreams.
My students need composition notebooks that will enable them to write their own story and storage crates.
As their English Language Arts teacher, I have a great burden to provide students the opportunities to write freely about hot topics, their dreams, and their desires for the future. We have a 20-30 minute advisory time at the end of the day that would be the perfect time for the students to reflect and write. I am compiling resources and prompts to which the students can respond and we also want the students to consider the aforementioned NPR article that encourages students to write their story.
The students will be free to take their journals with them, but the crates offer the teachers and students a central location to store the journals for safe-keeping.
We are the author of our life story, but many of us do not take the time to write. This is an amazing opportunity for my students to take the first step!
