Growing Budding STEM Learners into Blossoming Scientists!
My students need 15 STEM Science investigation tubs, 8 Science games - markers, pencils, a sharpener, staplers and a video camera to support literacy and STEM learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Think back to your days in the classroom; if your teacher asked, "Would you rather read your textbook or build a marble roller-coaster?" what would you say? Almost undoubtedly you'd want to start building. Project-based learning is exactly what we need to grow future scientists and engineers!
I have served nearly 900 Title-1 elementary students in our nation's 4th largest city since arriving with the Teach for America program in 2006.
I run the Adventure Science Lab where students come to do scientific investigations, from looking at soil samples with microscopes to calculating the mass of pumpkins. As the Science content specialist I am responsible for instructing all students in the lab, and helping to plan Science lessons with all teachers for all classes grades K-4.
Our public school is a mix of African-American, African, Latino, and Pacific and Southeast Asian students; over 80% of students receive free lunch. Our students are normal kids on the surface, who often face tremendous challenges during non-school hours. As teachers, we often have to fight the realities of our students' low-socioeconomic status in tandem with giving them the education they need. In turn, they inspire us with their resilience and enthusiasm for learning.
My Project
All Science instruction is heading towards STEM - Science Technology Engineering and Math - learning. It is very important that students have a basis in all four areas so that they are best prepared for a strong academic future. To create a generation of future scientists, we have to invest them early and these lab materials from Lakeshore Learning will do exactly that. These Lakeshore Lab tubs have everything needed for important hands-on lessons that are catered to each individual grade level. In the primary kit, students will discover rocks and soil, plants, animals, weather, insects, force and motion, and the solar system. From exciting experiments to high-interest writing projects, each tub has 40 card with activities. In the intermediate kit, concepts covered include electricity, matter, simply machines, cells, the human body, properties of Earth, and the Solar System. Finally, the video camera will allow students to document their work in video science journals!
The key factor here is your support.
My students are hungry to learn about Science and anything that makes Science fun is invaluable to a teacher like me. You can feed my students hunger for knowledge and support my classroom with a fabulous lesson in philanthropy. Any little bit helps, and thank you for reading my proposal and supporting classrooms just like mine on the amazing DonorsChoose.org!
