My Students

"Mr. B, you've cured me!" declared one student after reader's workshop. This student, and so many other of my 8th grade students, are discovering a love of reading, expressing themselves in their writing, and applying real world skills in our classroom.

My students need to be flooded with books, given the opportunity to see different viewpoints of the world around them, and develop strong reading habits.

My students are a diverse group of learners (ESL, low-poverty, middle class, etc) from urban Texas, ready to take on the world!

My Project

When I ask students at the beginning of the year how many of them have completed books recently, an alarming number of them tell me that they have never read a book on their own. They don't plan on reading, don't ever hope to read, and I can't change them. That needs to change. My students need books that excite them, show them a different viewpoint, and pushes them to read.

One of the single most important factors in students developing reading lives and habits is choice--and a classroom library provides just that.

With a classroom library, students will have even more access to books that will capture their attention and change them from non-readers to voracious readers. Help me develop a generation of readers!
