This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My PreK students are in their first year of a PreK-5 Spanish Immersion program. The students come from English, Spanish and other language backgrounds. Our wonderful program has been in existence since the early 1990's but added PreK in 2004. It is a unique opportunity to learn a second language while focusing on social emotional development and kindergarten readiness in a public school setting. Our goal is to foster bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism that will last our students a lifetime.

My Project

In our Pre-K class we do a ton of hands on learning in our outdoor garden spaces. Living in Southern California, we can take advantage of the moderate weather and grow flowers and vegetables throughout the entire school year. It is so important for young children to get in the dirt and really live first hand where our food comes from.

By having garden beds on our own playground, our students get to experience the entire plant life cycle from seed to fruit, watering and weeding as we go along.

The children will plant seeds, observe and journal about their progress, and in the end, enjoy the "fruits" of their labor by eating fresh veggies right out of the garden!
