My Students
This year my students are all Seniors and having lived through social upheaval, pandemic, and the search for truth, they are hungry for answers. My students were Sophomores when their world was turned upside down. The answers for students come from a variety of sources, many of which were inaccessible and or absent for the duration and causing a definitive disconnect. For some, those answers come in the form of discourse, family/friends, the internet and social media, the quality of which often is dictated by unknown, misinformation, and lack of personal introspection. I want to bring back that introspection in their lives.
It amazes me how resilient and passionate my students are about what is going on in the world and that alone inspires and motivates me to put before them the best resources to navigate the world.
It's an amazing time to be teaching and watching a reset of sorts take place and the students begin again to shift back to building on their learning. My hope is to capitalize on this shift and use it as fuel to engage all my students.
My Project
The difference these books make in the lives and learning of my students is that texts, particularly fiction texts are where many readers find solutions to life's big questions or share something in common with a book's protagonist, or at least the conflict the protagonist is dealing with.
Students will be able to pre-read and read books in class and also check out a book to have on their person whether at school or at home.
Having this access is crucial as we know how easy a roadblock of any kind can deter good reading-and we want students to get hooked on reading.
