My Project
What makes my students special is that they are a self-conatined life skills class in an environmental science magnet high school. Our curriculum parallels the regular education classes of their grade-level peers, and we add plenty of opportunities to interact with the school community. The class has been busy this year gathering seeds and rooting cuttings, and we have a good assortment ready to plant. There are vegetable seeds saved from our food lessons - tomato, pumpkin, squash, and pepper, to name a few. We gathered flower seeds - marigold, for example - from outdoor gardens. Add to that houseplant cuttings given to us by staff and family, and we have the potential for amazing green spaces indoors and out! All we need is the soil.
Our goal is to put learning into practice by adding spaces in and around our school that bring beauty, enjoyment, and food!
Outdoors we have raised beds waiting for our seedlings-to-be. Indoors we are decorating every room with houseplants. Not only will they be a beautiful addition, but they will create a better place to learn and grow. My students love hands-on projects, especially ones that add skills to their repertoire. They will learn life-long skills and lessons taking care of these plants and sharing their successes with the school community.
