Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Many children in this low income neighborhood are only fed processed foods and junk foods, yet many families comes from agricultural roots. This project will allow students to reconnect with the Earth and their family, and take control over their food futures. They will truly be growing their own meals.

Students are dismayed at the quality of food available in their community. They yearn for fresh produce and the chance to get their hands dirty in the pursuit of nutrition. When they were told that they could grow their own lunches, kids went wild with anticipation. They talk of how their parents have worked in fields and how they want to be healthy by eating more veggies. This project will allow students to learn a great deal about horticulture, agriculture, and botany and nutrition as well. This project will succeed as students plan and produce all the bountiful harvests!

There is a wealth of research that supports the fact that students enjoy eating vegetables that they had a hand in growing. The goal of this project is for students in a low income area to experience the joy of harvesting fresh produce that they had an interest in growing. The healthy lifestyle and appreciation of botanical sciences is directly related to many families histories in agricultural labor in California. We hope to utilize an open space on campus and transform it into a thriving grow area where students can come and learn science concepts, write about fragrances and textures in English, or create still life portraits in art. The grow space will be a true learning environment grounded in the plants that abound there. Students will meet and exceed numerous Common Core standards in this rich, relevant, and real center for student learning!

In Their Own Words

We want to be able to grow lots of plants that can be examples of science that we study in Biology and Earth Science while in Middle School. We will see the process of growth and life from the seed, to seedling, to small plant, to flowering and fruiting for each vegetable we grow. We want to make a cool salad bar for students to taste the things we grew and make comments on our school website. We want to look for other school gardens and compare experiences with agriculture. We will eat fresh!

We will be in charge of planting and also watering lots of plants and keeping records and notes about how they are growing. We want to make really good salads for others that might only like to eat fast food. The school has a really good space to use to grow veggies and we want to make the most of it and feed people with healthy food. We don't have enough farmer's markets in the community and people deserve to have some healthy and delicious food to eat. It'll be exciting to harvest our veggies!

Most kids don't eat enough vegetables in their diet. If we actually grow vegetables at our school, I think more kids will try them. We want to get this project started so we can bring something fresh and healthy to the community and make a change so people can get more vitamins and goodness in their meals. We want to use the area on our campus that is basically wasted and grow lots of things that are useful and will be able to be shared with everybody. We want to have parents come to the garden too!
