My Students

I teach twenty-five happy and excited-to-learn third graders. All day long they have fun growing, thinking, and trying their best. Our school is a wonderful, small multicultural school located in Los Angeles. Many of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast.

I teach a fantastic group of students that leap with full force onto any project I suggest.

I am amazed every day how hard they try, and how much heart and care they put into their work and projects. One way to engage my students both at school and at home is to have a take home project for students to work on with their family at home.

My Project

This project was inspired by the Learning Grows at Home: Amazing Bending Plants project. In order to get my students excited about science, I have requested 20 Grow a Maze kits. My students will build the kits after school, and design their own plant maze. Each student will take home 2 kits - one with a maze and one without a maze. I will also provide lima beans and planting mix with each kit so the families will easily be able to start the Maze Experiment!

The students will work with their family to add soil, lima beans, and water to both kits, and then watch the seeds grow and develop.

Students will record their observations daily to see if their plants are able to grow and follow the maze they have constructed.

The control for this experiment will be the kit without a maze. The students can make a hypothesis about which kit will have plants that grow the tallest, which kit will have plants that reach the top of the maze the quickest, etc.

I have also requested a root viewer so students can watch carrots grow and compare this to the carrots in their home garden.
