Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The biggest challenge I have with my math students is helping them retain the information they have learned from a lesson. I found that technology not only motivates them to learn but with continuous use of a math program they are able to retain the math concepts learned.

My students attend a public school in Florida.

Our school is a Title I school, as the majority of the students are on free or reduced lunch. Over 90% of the student population is ESOL (ELL) who are limited English speakers. Our school is also over 90% Hispanic, however we do have some students from other countries. Many of my students have computers at home. However, I do come across some students who do not have Internet access or do not have any technology at home at all. I am hoping that this project will allow those students more access to technology in school.

My Project

My classroom has four computer that 85 students have to share. Students rotate in order to have access to those computers. With the limited hours in the day and only four computers, students sometimes have to wait one week before their time comes up again to visit the computer. The two Windows Tablet that I am requesting will help with additional computers in the classroom. We will soon have wireless access in our school and students will be able to use the Tablets at their desks in a math center. One of the programs that I use with them allows them to interact and compete against each other using math games. Access to these tablets will allow them to sit anywhere in the classroom and be able to compete and enjoy the learning while playing!

This project will make a difference in many ways.

First it will give the opportunity for more students to use technology in the classroom. I have many students that come to my class early before school or during their lunch time to use the classroom computers. Many I turn away because all the computers are being used. The HDMI cable will allow students to project the program they are working on and have the entire class enjoy the program as well.
