My Students
My students come from a rural farm community. Our school is a Pre-K through 6th grade building. We have five first grade classrooms. Each class has about twenty two students. There are a little over 900 students in our building. We are a Title I school with about 50% qualifying for free and reduced services. I have a very diverse group of first grade students in my room each year. This year, I have students with special needs, an ELL background, ADHD, foster children, and the list goes on and on. All of my students are very active 6 and 7 year olds, as they should be!
My Project
Small groups are a very important part in differentiation and meeting the needs of all my students. I have 22 students in my classroom with a wide variety of needs and ability levels. Small groups are the only way to target their needs. With small groups, I can work with students at their actual reading and math levels. This allows me to help enrich and reteach key skills that certain students need, to propel them in their learning. The horseshoe table has a deep cutout to allow me to easily listen to small groups read, work with them on writing, and on math skills. It also sets the atmosphere for a private setting. I will be close to the students, this will allow us to talk quietly back and forth. The horseshoe table will ensure privacy and not let other kids know strengths and weakness of others. This table will be used throughout the entire day, all week long. I am very excited about the HUGE impact this one small table will have on my entire classroom!
