Groundwater Simulation System for my 9th and 11th Graders
My project needs a groundwater model as well as a groundwater model refill which will simulate both how water percolates through the ground and how groundwater is extremely susceptible to contamination by pollutants.

I am requesting the donation of a groundwater model to serve as a learning aide as well as a laboratory activity for my 9th and 11th grade science students. I teach both environmental science and earth science to a group of predominantly underprivileged minority students.
After teaching the topic of groundwater last year, I came to the realization that most if not all of my students were completely unaware that it existed and could be used as a source of drinking water. The idea that the dirt and rocks could act as a filtration system completely baffled them. Not only did they have a difficult time visualizing the concept they had difficulty comprehending the idea of runoff and how, if polluted, it can be detrimental to the quality of water in an aquifer.
My hope is that the groundwater model will not only facilitate my students' understanding of how water travels through the ground and is thereby filtered, but also how crucial and limited our water supply is. I plan on using the model daily for at least 2 weeks while we discuss porosity, permeability, extraction techniques, runoff and possible sources of pollution. I will also incorporate labs in which students can introduce "contaminants" and watch and record how they devastate the water supply.
I think this donation would be extremely beneficial to a population of urban students who have little interaction with nature nor understanding of it.
