Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students approach art and music with a sense of intimidation - that they cannot create beautiful and meaningful works. I work every day to change that by making art open and accessible, in a warm environment. My students have made great strides, coming to embrace art as a primary form of expression

I work in a public primary school in a mainly Hispanic community in New York.

The school has a large ELL population, with many students coming from areas where Spanish is the primary language. As a result, many students are isolated by the language barrier. In addition, my students struggle economically, almost all living at and well below the poverty level. Crime, domestic violence and substance abuse are rampant throughout the neighborhood, leaving many of the children with threatening and unsafe home and community environments. For many, school is a last sanctuary of calm and comfort. Unfortunately, New York does not consider art or music to be high priority subjects. As a result, I teach over 450 students per week with very few supplies. Just recently, I also took on a Little Kids Rock music program. Given the intense pressure and sense of powerlessness under which they live their day-to-day lives, having no art/music often means having no voice.

My Project

My students thirst for ways to express themselves. I teach them that “Art is recognized as a way to express oneself through any subject through any medium.” This project is built with a synthesis of science, literature, history and music. I plan on using my time in Little Kids Rock to teach my children the power of song. Performing other musicians’ works is a wonderful experience, but I seek to go beyond performance to have the kids explore expression through songwriting. This project will focus on writing songs about Earth and the environment. The children will also perform their own songs. For this project I will need a guitar pickup, amplifier and microphone for the new songwriters to perform at school and around the community.

By supporting this project you will ignite a whole group of children who will feel the beauty and transformative power of expressing oneself through music.

They will learn to experiment with songwriting and performing in a safe and supportive environment and begin to explore the power of their own voice through music. For the many of my children who suffer from a sense of isolation, you will be supporting their connection to Mother Earth, themselves and each other.
