Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 8th grade physical science in a high-need community. My students know my philosophy: "You learn science by doing science".

During the first week of school I introduced what it means to learn science by doing science through a small lab activity. They were so excited and shocked that they were able to do a lab the first week of school. I told them I would try to prepare a lab for them each week so they could apply what they have learned in class to actual inquiry based activities. So far we have completed 3 labs in 3 weeks.

As the students move toward learning more about elements, compounds and eventually chemical reactions, I want them to actually explore these concepts through lab activities. My students need calculators to help analyze their results. They need goggles to protect them from any fumes or splashing that may occur. My class knows to be careful, but accidents do happen. In order to do more inquiry based chemistry labs I need to know my students are safe! Besides, how cool is it to LOOK like a scientist.

You help will ensure that my students know how to ACT like scientists. Acting like a scientist means following lab procedures and directions, being safe at all times, and writing detailed analysis and conclusions. Your help will ensure my students ARE scientists, and look good in the process.
