This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first grade at an awesome school in an area of Los Angeles called Watts. I teach Dual Language (Spanish/English) to both native and non-native speakers who are very eager and excitable. They are in need of an outlet for all that energy while developing their second language skills and a love for music.

All of my students receive free lunch because of their income level and several of them come from single-parent homes.

As a result, my students are less likely to be exposed to any formal musical training unless it is through school.

They are an intelligent, caring, and fun group of students. They are very eager to learn and very inquisitive, always asking questions. My students deserve to have access to the latest in children's musical instruments to develop their language and music skills.

My Project

There's nothing more universal than music. This musical set will help students find their groove will developing second language skills.

The students in the Dual Language class are energetic and eager learners.

They are excited to be learning a second language and are very willing to try new things. Through lessons based on reading songs, chants and poems set to music, I think the musical instruments will not only help my students acquire new vocabulary in their native language but also in the target language as well. But most importantly I hope to inspire in them a love for music.
