My Students

My students are juniors who want to challenge themselves and they will be taking an Honors-level course, which, for many of them, will be their first Honors class. I want to make the class as engaging as possible and incorporate literature with relevant texts, pushing them not only to engage in rigorous readings but to make the work highly engaging.

Our students are the forgotten kids: low-income students at a neighborhood school, students who are diverse learners, ELL students, immigrants from over 30 different countries, students at serious risk of dropping out.

Yet, despite these diverse factors, they all have one thing in common—they are amazing.

This junior year Honors course is an important stepping stone for them—it paves the way to a Dual Credit or Advanced Placement college-level course for them, but it can be daunting. With colleges placing more and more of an emphasis on independent thesis statements and text to text connections, I want to teach my students how to develop these skills before they ever leave our high school, and having engaging reading content is the key.

My Project

The reason we want highly engaging reading material right now is that we don't know if at some point our students will return to remote learning, as the COVID numbers in Chicago are rapidly rising. So we are planning ahead just in case, and if we don't go back to remote learning, we will happily engage with this unit in the school building! But if my students have a book I know they will want to read, even if they are stuck at home, then they will be set no matter what.

The graphic novels they study will extend our Dystopian Unit, where we have examined why authors create the worlds they create, and what real-life events have led to the message the author wants to send.

In other words, what stories should we tell and what's the best way to tell them? These skills, where students combine analysis of author's purpose with interpreting why the author/illustrator chooses to convey their message through these particular narrative and visual elements, will lead to students then evaluating the effectiveness of these authorial choices as create their own Book Pitch for a graphic novel their group conceives of to send a message they feel is needed right now in our own world, whether that message is about human rights, climate change, threats to desmocracy, immigration, women's rights, LGTBQ rights, disability rights, or animal welfare.
