This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have always known that somehow I had to give back to my community. When I became a teacher, it was not difficult to decide where I would teach, I went back to my roots to teach in a low income school located in the heart of a Mexican Community. I teach in a 5th grade bilingual classroom, where the majority of my students come from homes with very little formal education. Although I wish I could bring all the needed resources to my school, I find it impossible.
My classroom never has a minute of boredom.
The kids are highly active and involved in their learning, with your help, I will be able to bring seven Chromebooks into the classroom. When donors like yourself help out, you are making a world of a difference. Together we can make a difference in our children's lives.
My Project
I am a fifth grade teacher, who will be encouraging students grades 4-6 to join Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books is a reading program through CPS that encourages reading along with teamwork. Students read a variety of books altogether, they then work together to score points in the spring during three rounds of competitions. During the competition, students have to work together to answer questions about the books they read. This is my third year hosting Battle of the Books and I love the energy that comes from reading the books, as well as the engagement and teamwork during the competition.
The students love discussing the books they read, therefore motivating other students to read that same book.
When we sit down to discuss the books students are encouraged to write questions about the books as they read. Some questions can be used for in-depth exploration and conversations during book club meetings and some questions are knowledge level questions that can be used to prepare for the online battle competition. We will be using the composition notebooks to reflect on the books we are reading & the white boards will be used to talk share what we read.
Participation in the Battle of the Books helps promote greater depth and breadth of student reading, encourages cooperation, teamwork, reading motivation and accomplishment. What I like most of all, is that even if we do not win I feel like a winner, because I exposed the students to so many books and genres and we had great in depth discussions that they would otherwise have not had. In Battle of the Books everyone’s a winner.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
