My Students

Maui is filled with a plethora of brilliant, diverse, kind-hearted children that seek a safe, fun place to grow and learn together. The students at Kihei Charter are exceptionally different. Each young adult reaches out to assist one another when someone is hurting, has their own individual and unique approach to life's problems, genuinely cares and loves to learn and grow, and goes the extra mile to be the best person and student that they can be. The students make me proud to be a teacher, and remind me daily why I decided to work in this profession.

My Project

In the past year, I was introduced to a wonderful program called Nā Keiki O Emalia. Based on Maui, Nā Keiki O Emalia is an organization that provides support to grieving children, teens, and their families to help them heal after the death of a family member.

Towards the beginning of the third quarter last year, one of my students lost her father-- she was distraught, and couldn't find the words to vocalize it to others.

It became a goal of mine to help her in any small way I could. Through community connections and a caring administration, this organization was brought to my attention. During lunch, a group of students who suffered major losses in their close families came to my classroom to meet with these generous and helpful souls.

Although the help was there, the students struggled with attendance to these meetings. Understandably, they battled with the decision to either receive help, open up, and discuss their pain with experienced professionals, or go to lunch and continue to numb their thoughts with students their age.

My goal is to give the students a comfortable place to look forward to, to talk, to grieve, and to grow together, while fostering a welcoming environment that appeals to them. I am asking for an aesthetically appealing setup so that they can gather around a comfortable table (round- to open up conversations, tablecloth for appeal), and enjoy a cup of tea (tea cups and tea kettle) while they address their emotions with professionals. Finally, I am asking for highly recommended books, On Death and Dying and The Alchemist, and canvas and easels for the students that may not be able to vocalize their problems, but would prefer to read, write, or paint about them instead.
