Greetings, Literature Meets Mathematics

My students need a library of 21 rich math texts ranging from the "Sir Cumference" series to "Flatland".

As a mathematics teacher in an inner city school, I have the joy and challenge of teaching a subject that many students find to be frustrating and difficult. I teach students Geometry, Algebra and Statistics. As a result, I work with students from a range of backgrounds and interests, who genuinely reflect the diversity of the city.

My students need another lens through which to view mathematics. Our classroom does not have the library of mathematical texts that could encourage students to see the applications of math in the world. They need to be excited about mathematics again as we are surrounded by the rigors of test-prep.

Your support will help us to foster the growth of a classroom library. We need a collection of books to get us started. There are so many interesting math books available that my students have never even heard of. I want to recommend that they read Flatland, the Sir Cumference series, Flatterland, Sacred Geometry, e: the Story of a Number and so many other great books. By providing us with these books, I will be able to hand each student a book and let them take it home to enjoy at their own pace. Then each student can share the story from the book he/she read with the class.

You will make it possible for students to delve in to the world of math through a different portal than a math textbook. Their reading skills will improve and their enjoyment of mathematics will increase.
