This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has a large vegetable garden. An indoor greenhouse will open up new gardening and science opportunities. Students plant, harvest, and maintain the garden. Every teacher integrates gardening and science. Our students love to garden and will jump at a chance for more gardening opportunities

Our students are eager to learn and appreciate additional activities that we are able to provide through grants from organizations, such as DonorsChoose.org.

Most families choose to transfer their children to our school. Others live in the neighborhood. Students are from many different cultures and approximately 40% speak English as a second language. A large majority of our students come from lower income families and qualify for free or reduced priced lunch.

My Project

A small indoor greenhouse will expand the gardening experience for all the students at our school. Students will be able to start seedlings indoors for spring planting outdoors. Students will also use the greenhouse for science experiments including testing germination rates, optimum lighting, and the best soils for rapid growth. The greenhouse is well designed so plants will grow rapidly. This will allow students to quickly observe results to their experiments.

The greenhouse will grab the attention of every student.

Our school has no large, interactive science equipment or apparatus. Every teacher decorates their classroom and has some science equipment available, but no classroom has a large piece of equipment. Because of this, students will be very interested in the greenhouse. The greenhouse is on wheels, so teachers will be able to move it between classrooms. Our school has 160 students and all will benefit!
