My Students
I teach at a specialized math and science high school in New York City. Students must take an entrance exam even though it is a public school. The students of my school are so inquisitive, and have such a drive to learn. This is evident when looking at their full schedules and packed after school activities. These are some of the best and brightest students in all of New York City, and they make going to work every day a JOY!
My Project
As the final project for the Urban Ecology class, students are asked to design and then build a "Green Building." The students have to incorporate a functioning green roof, as well as green infrastructure into their buildings and the surrounding area. The green roof will be tested - every building has a cup of dirty water poured on it, and the group with the greatest filtration and slowest drainage wins!
The joy the students get when the building is complete and they can see if their drainage system works is infectious.
Last term was the first time my students completed this project - every student said I should continue to assign the project. I asked the students what materials they needed to make the project better, and I have requested some of those items here; colored tape for design aspects, sponges to create a layer of their green roof, and artificial turf to create their landscaping. I am excited to see what the new semester of students will dream up ... and with your help their plans could become a reality!
