it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The old saying, "It's Greek to me" means you don't understand what someone is saying to you. This happens every day to my students since English is not their first language. I discovered last year that when I introduced the world of Greek mythology, my students became hooked on reading.
My class is made of two grades and two languages.
They are 4th and 5th graders whose primary language is Spanish and come from humble to moderate beginnings. They often live with relatives and have little to no books at home to read, let alone novels. My students are always the quietest and best behaved class, not because I have superior class management, but because they have been sheltered and live in fear of being made fun of for their limited English. I cannot tell you how many times I have found that ideas or sayings that we take for granted, that all people should know, they have yet to have been exposed to. Books are a luxury that they would rather not waste money on. I teach my students the value of reading and books by finding books that will keep them wanting more. After reading The Lightning Thief to my students last year, I found that they were saving their money to purchase the next book in the series and looking for more books on Greek mythology. What more could I ask for?
My Project
I'm asking for a class set of the Lightning Thief, the audio cassette, and another novel on Favorite Greek Myths by a well known children's book writer. I already have a curriculum that I incorporate while reading the mythology that has crafts that correlate with the myths. Students learn reading better when they both hear and see the words. That's why it is important for each student to have a copy. If they can't each have a copy then they can at least share one which is what I have set up for the second book. Since I have already read the book and seen its effect, I know that it will be a great success and inspire all the kids to want to move on and continue the series outside of the classroom.
Greek and Roman mythology is loved and referenced in so many way in our society.
From the names of our planets, to the construction of National monuments, it is not hard to see how important it is to continue teaching the myths. The items I have chosen present a unique and modern version of the myths, while inspiring the students to go back and learn the classic stories. By donating these items to our class, you will provide students with a chance to discover worlds that they never knew.
