Greatness through Guitar

My students need a guitar, a guitar stand to safely hold the guitar, and a children's folk song book with guitar chords for their music classroom.

My Students

Music is an important part of my students' lives. Each student in my building receives sixty minutes of music class each week. Singing is a very important part of music class, and my students would love a guitar to play and sing along with.

My students live in a suburban area in a Midwest city.

They love coming to music class to sing, dance, and play instruments. The students in my school get sixty minutes of music instruction a week. There is a choir and a drum ensemble for third through fifth graders. Each grade level gets a chance to perform in a concert each school year. Music is an integral part of my students' school experience.

My Project

My students will learn about the history of guitar and its importance in today's music. They will also learn to play a number of chords so they can accompany themselves and their class's singing. The students will appreciate the complex beauty of the instruments when listening to their teacher play with them as they sing. A guitar in our classroom will increase interest in and appreciation of music. It will increase students' knowledge of music theory; as they learn chords and chord changes, they learn about harmony and how it changes with the melody.

This project will improve and enrich my classroom in many ways.

First, my students will have a hands-on approach to learning about harmony and how harmony and melody work together to make music. Second, they will experience the beauty of music through singing along with the guitar. Finally, having a guitar in our classroom will increase my students' interest in and appreciation of music. It would be wonderful if some of my students became inspired to purchase their own guitars to learn at home.
