Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a sixth grade class. There are twenty two students in my homeroom. Twenty one of the students are ELL students. At my school, 98% of the student population is eligible for free/reduced lunch. They are a great group of kids and we are working on ways to benefit society. They are working to help locally at the school and neighborhood level. They worked on anti-bullying activities and helped with a food drive for the local food bank.

We are trying to foster a community by participating in the "We Program".

The program focuses on volunteerism and going from "me to we". They also participate in the "Second Step" program that deals with Social Emotional Learning.

My Project

Students will create a Great Wall of China with at least two towers. They will create a zipline with a pulley system that will transport a marble in a small cup from one tower to another. They will make predictions about difficulties, brainstorm and draw how to effectively create the project, and conduct three trials to determine the best methodology.

By incorporating STEAM projects into Social science, the students get extremely excited and involved in the lessons!

The students will make the wall out of the styrofoam bricks and the zipline out of string with a cup attached to the string. If their pulley system can transport the marble, they will have been successful.
