Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 30 very gifted students who are caring and supportive of each other and of me. Each day brings new celebrations and challenges, and the students are eager to meet them head on. Students in the class come from all different backgrounds and bring to the school a wide variety of experiences.

Our school is a K-8 school with almost 1,000 students.

Students' abilities are diverse. As a staff, we are committed to developing the whole student, with an eye toward helping students become ready for high school and college once they graduate from our campus. Students have many support systems at the campus ranging from healthcare to after school programs along with a very active intramural sports program. Our school motto is "Every student reaches his or her academic and social potential."

My Project

My students need class sets of four novels to study and to create their own libraries. Every day, the students of my classroom can expect their brains to be stretched through higher level learning experiences! My intention is to establish a learning experience and environment that will lead to students creating a positive growth mindset for years to come!

This literary project is designed with an eye toward creating multiple student and parent engagement outcomes!

Students will participate each quarter in a literary and genre study. Each student will receive one book per quarter. Since the books are theirs to keep, they will be able to use close reading strategies throughout the book. Students will be highlighting, using sticky notes, adding comments, and taking books home nightly to read and share with parents and then creating projects to reflect how well they understood the novel study. Parents will participate in the reading and projects which will be completed at home! These books are theirs.
