This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students actually love to read! They love to read comic books. They want to learn how to read them better, which is why I want to offer them the chance to take a 10 week elective that focuses on the depth and historical relevance of comics.

My students are urban minorities attending a small school with limited funding and limited options in terms of the classes we can offer them.

We simply do not have enough teachers or enough classrooms. They so rarely get an opportunity for choice with the Regents board structuring all their classes around high-stakes exams. That's why they are so excited about their elective cycles. This is Part 2 of my project to give my students an elective course that they will truly be engaged by: Great Responsibility - Analyzing History Through Comic Books. Part 1 was successfully funded and 35 text books, "Understanding Comics," arrived last week. The students were clamoring to get a look at my sample copy. This course will allow my struggling readers, my reluctant readers, and my lovers of comic books the opportunity to participate in something unique and challenging.

My Project

Now we need the comic books and supplemental texts to study. We need 35 copies of the graphic novel "Watchmen" so that we can apply all the analytical techniques we will learn from our textbooks. We also need some supplemental texts to reinforce the lessons we are learning about history and comics literature, such as Superman Red Sun, an alternate history of Superman's life where he lands in Russia, instead of the United States, and strives for truth, justice, and Communist way! These supplemental texts will act as bridges to help students practice the skills they will master during their independent research papers.

Teaching a comic book elective will never work if we don't have the comic books to read.

We have the desire to read, we have the text books to learn, now we need the comic books to study. This course will offer at least 100 students the chance to show off their knowledge, their skills, and their drive to learn using the literature they love as the vehicle for success.
