This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember being read to at home every night? Unfortunately, many of my students have parents who do not read english and may miss out on this all important activity!
My students are mostly English Language Learners who live in a low socio-economic urban area in New York City.
Most of their parents are immigrants from other countries who do not speak English but work very hard with their children. I want them to succeed at reading and to build their self esteem and confidence.
My Project
I am requesting books that are leveled. Leveled books are books that readers can read independently on their own. These books will be available for my students to take home to read by themselves. I am also requesting special bags to keep the books they borrow in and journals that they can use to respond to the books.
One of the major differences between good and poor readers is the amount of time students spend reading.
Many studies have found a strong relationship between reading ability and how much a student reads. Learning to read is challenging. Getting lots of practice in books at the right level of difficulty builds confidence, motivation, and success.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
