Great Readers Need Great Books!

My students need 40-50 D E and F books on their independent reading levels such as: Biscuit Meets the Class Pet, Tiny Goes Camping, Giraffe Made Her Laugh, Who Will Be My Friends?, Zoom Zoom Zoom, City Mouse and Country Mouse, Itchy, Itchy Chickenpox, Good Night, Little Kitten, The Block Party and many more leveled readers.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day in my classroom, we have a literacy block in which my first grade students practice reading, writing, and phonics skills. During reading time, students are pulled into guided reading groups by me and my co teacher, and the rest of the class has 20 minutes of independent reading.

This year I have 28 students in my class, 9 of whom are students that have learning disabilities.

The students from my class live in a very poor, urban neighborhood with mostly immigrant families who speak little to no English at home. So in addition to having students with learning disabilities, the majority of our students are also ESL learners. This makes gaining progress in reading, difficult to say the least, and it's hard to get them motivated to read, when all the books in the class library are falling apart and pages are missing. We need new books on the students reading levels, to get them excited about, and wanting to read.

My Project

My co teacher and I are looking to get new books for our classroom library on levels that the students are currently on, and approaching. Currently, our leveled reading bins for D and E leveled books are almost empty, and the books in the bins are ripped and missing pages. We don't have enough books on these levels for all of our readers to circulate them around the room. These books will be sued by students to go into their reading baggies for them to read both in the classroom, and practice at home every night.

By receiving these new books, we hope to inspire a love of reading in our students and encourage them to read daily in the classroom and nightly at home and become better readers and be second grade ready!
