Great Readers Make Great Leaders

My students need books! And not just any books; books they want to read, books that reach many different readers, and books that relate to what we are learning in school!

My Students

Our school is located in a small rural community. Many of my students are the sons and daughters of farmers and blue collar workers. Students in our school also come from migrant families who do seasonal work here. Often, families move in and out of our school zone when job opportunities change. They may not stay at this school for the entire year. This means my kids have a constantly changing peer group.

My students are some of the most ambitious and enthusiastic second graders you will meet.

They come to school every morning ready to dive in to their day. Many of the students in my class have learning disabilities or behavior disorders that make school more challenging for them. They don't let it hinder them in any way! We learn every day that the students are the ones in charge of their own attitude and their own day.

I love being a second grade teacher and spending my day devoted to teaching the next generation to be lifelong learners. My students are so important to me and I know they will go out into the world one day and do great things!

My Project

Over the course of this school year, I have watched my students grow, learn, and lead their own reading. I have a good classroom library that was donated to me from various sources, but I have found some gaps! By funding this project, you will be providing my classroom with more diverse books, more books about history, books that reach struggling readers and books that reach voracious readers. You will be helping me integrate stories into my curriculum and make impactful lessons by giving me the ability to read to my students and with my students. I have also included the book buckets for practical reasons. Storage is a big deal in a small classroom! I have tried different ways of organizing the students' choices but there never fails to be an argument over who had what book. I am hoping that the buckets will allow students to make about 10 choices and keep the same books for several days in a row. No trading! This way, they can practice reading and re-reading (vital for comprehension), we minimize movement through the classroom during reading time, and we minimize conflicts between students!
