Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It is a rare thing to see a group of high school students band together and insist on more and more challenging work. When this happens, first, you celebrate. Then, if you are an English teacher, you start tracking down books.
I work at a small inner-city high school that opened last year with few advanced course offerings.
Our students organized and lobbied for more demanding coursework, and this year we are proud to offer a wide variety of AP courses, including my AP English Language class. My students this year are brilliant and motivated, rising to the challenge of this reading and writing-intensive course.
My Project
I am requesting one class set of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. AP English Language is predominantly a nonfiction course, in which students analyze arguments and rhetorical style. I believe strongly that fiction presents its own type of argument, and that students can learn much about a topic by viewing it through an author's eyes. We will read this novel during a unit of study entitled “Perfecting Humanity,” in which we will explore “imperfection” as part of the human condition.
This unit will address a range of topics from ability and disability to plastic surgery, genetic engineering, and the insatiable desire for happiness. When read alongside scholarly articles, research, and essays, Brave New World will allow students to better contextualize and consider these issues. By the unit’s end, students will produce nuanced writing that will synthesize information from these source documents into a powerful argument of their own.
By donating to this project, you will help students connect classic literature with the ideas and issues of our day.
You will also help build a strong AP program that offers the intellectual challenge our students desire.
