Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach eighth-grade math in the South Bronx in a very poor school where the majority of students receive financial help with basics like supplies and food. Their math skills in general are seriously lagging. More importantly, the majority of students now fear math because they struggle at it, and this fear creates a vicious cycle.
I am striving to show them how math can be fun and vital to their lives. Kids love to be challenged and have fun. By playing games, students can learn and get excited again about math. This will help them in all areas of their lives.
I want to provide an iQuest video math game for my students to allow them to play math games. This iQuest is like a Game Boy that students love. They will be learning math but having fun doing it! This will allow me and my other math teachers to reach all levels of students. I will be able to teach a lesson, and then use the iQuest to individualize the practice. Lower-level students can start on easier problems to build confidence. The benefits of using such games have been proved to make a significant difference in students' math scores.
I know that creating such an environment would surely increase my students' ability and interest in mathematics. Any help would be a great service!
