This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The past few years have been hard on our education system in general but have left our students and teachers struggling with apprehension, depression, and anxiety. Additionally, childhood obesity is a growing concern. Emphasis on screen time (in an effort to make up COVID gaps) does not promote healthy lifestyle choices for our students. Combining the mental state of our students/ staff, with the pressure to close gaps and the lack of exercise/playtime that exists in our current school systems, we have a clear reason why so many are anxious, frustrated, and disengaged! Our students need more opportunities to be active.

Drums Alive presents us with a perfect solution - we can address our students' mental state as well as provide an experience for the kids to adopt healthier lifestyle habits that foster high energy and fun.

Mister Rogers said that play is the work of childhood. The kids will think we are playing and having a great time, while they're improving their motor skills, balance, and coordination as well as their fitness levels and cardio respiratory function. This productive energy release triggers dopamine and serotonin, which improve mood. Exercise is being advised as an important component in addressing ADHD, depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and bipolar disorder. Mental health is increasingly an area that needs to be considered both for our students and our staff.

I hope that with this program, we can offer these benefits to our students.
