My Students

Imagine a building full of 4 and 5 year olds, eager and enthusiastic, ready to learn. These are my students at a newly established PreK - Kindergarten school, designed with the vision of providing the very best educational start for the young children in our community. The majority of our students are on free/reduced-price lunch and for many of them our school serves as the hub from which much of their social, emotional, as well as educational growth will begin to take place. As their librarian, I have the wonderful job of introducing them to literature and the world of reading.

For many of our students, visiting the school library will be their only opportunity to access the resources that will open up the world to them.

These children enter the library excited for the next character they will meet and the next place they will travel to, imagination is sparked and creativity strengthened through the books we read.

Learning is built on literacy and the library is undoubtedly the ideal location to lay that foundation.

My Project

As the school librarian I know it is essential to have a wide variety of books, covering all of the different genres and a range of reading levels. Since we are a new school, our library collection is in its beginning stages of growth. Many more books are needed to fill our shelves and provide the resources necessary to draw in our young learners, leading them to a love for reading.

This project will help fill our library shelves, enabling students to learn and grow through literacy and inspiring a lifelong love for reading.

It is also critical that we have enough books so that students can "check them out". This allows them to have a sense of ownership over their reading as well as building skills such as responsibility and independence. It also gives them an opportunity to share with their families, show off their developing reading skills, and develop a sense of pride in themselves.
