My students need lower level books for guided reading. We have lots higher level books for students to read, but have very few lower level books for students who struggle.

My Students
My students love books and are even more excited when they can choose what books they get to read. Through guided reading books, we can teach specific comprehension strategies that will help students move to the next level as readers and thinkers.
Our school is in a rural community, in South Carolina, where tradition is thick and families depend on one another.
We are a Title I school which means that over 40% of our students are on free or reduced lunch plans. Students in our school are considered at risk of failure and live at or near poverty level. I have students from many different races, religions, and academic levels. Their interests are just as diverse! My students are full of personality and are just beginning to discover that they can make a difference in their world. However, many of my students do not read fluently and we need are in need of resources to help them achieve greater success.
My Project
My students need books on their level so they can continue to grow as a reader. In some of our 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms, we have students who are still on a lower reading level and are unable to read the books found in the classroom libraries. If a book is too hard, the reader becomes frustrated and discouraged. The best way to grow is by reading books that are not too hard and not too easy. We need lower level books so every student can have books they can read independently. As a result, these students will help them grow fluency and word recognition skills that will bump them up to the next level.
