My Students

As we gear up for the end of the year, I cannot help but think about all that we still have left to learn! As an English as a second language teacher, the pressure is on to ensure that my little third graders have everything in their tool box to excel in both the Azella exam and the AZ Merit.

My students work so hard to achieve their goals on a daily basis.

For many, simply getting to school is a great achievement! My classroom is a community of English Language Learners with a variety of language skills. Third grade is a huge year in which my learners can build a lasting love for reading or become disengaged readers for their coming academic years. However, many of my students do not have access to any reading materials at home. This builds the odds against them and further prevents them from continuing to build their love of reading with a good book. All of my students come from very hard working families, but with many living below the poverty line, priority will always fall on making sure the essentials are covered and not on purchasing a book.

My Project

Providing my students with a classroom library that is compiled of a variety of reading genres and has the capacity to serve a multitude of reading levels is detrimental to building the love of reading in my learners. We will use the leveled readers in this order to supplement their silent reading time. We will also use all the different leveled readers as part of our book loaning system in which a student can check out a book to take home and read at home. Having a multitude of genres helps spark the interest of all readers not just a specific group. Since my students are expected to read at home on a nightly basis, having the different levels will allow for them to be successful with reading at their own level.

This contribution to our classroom library will make the daily reading routine of my learners much more meaningful since they will have a wider selection of reading materials to read in the classroom and at home.

In addition to this, the nonfiction leveled readers will help build our knowledge of things happening around the world. That opens the window to further a child's learning and that can be tied into our discussions, writing and research-based projects!
