My Students
The right book can hook a child on reading, forever. My students didn't learn to read in first grade, and missed out on all those great picture books and easy readers.
Learning disabilities plague most of my elementary school students.
They've worked hard to master the skill of reading, now I want to turn them on to the joy of reading for pleasure and knowledge. Our urban school never has enough modern, just-right books, and my resource room has gaping holes where 4th and 5th graders are concerned.
My Project
These delicious books will fill a void on our bookshelves. I've taught at this school for 2.5 years, and now most of my students are just a step away from grade-level in reading. We'll start reading these high-interest books as a group, then finish independently. Once they've discovered how delicious reading can be, my students will clamor for more and zip through all of these books in no time. Success will occur when my students WANT to read, on their own. These books will help that happen.
My students will enjoy the challenge, learn they CAN finish a book, and find themselves hungry for more.
Success means they'll not need me any more, and exiting children from special ed services is what my job is all about!
