My Students

I am the reading and literacy intervention teacher at a high-poverty school. I serve all students in the school by providing access to great books, book recommendations, and reading instruction. I notice specifically that my students need examples of kindness and caring.

My students range from Kindergarten to fifth grade.

Most of my students are reading below grade level. Specifically, the majority of the students in the school have a hard time reading and writing. My goal is to inspire not only a love of reading and learning, but also a love of learning and a sense of citizenship. I want to help my students be productive and enthusiastic adults. They need to learn to be kind, patient and caring with others. They also need to learn what it means to be a friend.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of high-interest books around the topic of kindness, tolerance, and friendship. Some of the books, such as Horrible Harry, include favorite characters. Others are great picture books that will last for years to come. I have also requested books written and illustrated by Patricia Polocco, a fabulous author who often discusses unfairness, family issues, and friendship.

I would love to infuse my collection of books with literature on the topic of fairness, kindness, sharing, bullies, and tolerance.

Many teachers come to me for books to read aloud- I would be happy to give them any one of these books. Each and every title would be great for starting a class discussion about fairness and what is right.
