Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students need the opportunity to be introduced to great art and artists through literature and activities. I teach art at an inner city school to students from low income families. Sadly most of them have had very little exposure to fine arts and artists.

Our schools student body consists primarily of emigrants or children of first or second generation Americans. Most of my students have very little exposure to anything outside of school and their homes.

I have found that quality literature is a great way to expose students to new ideas, knowledge, and experiences. These books are written so that they hold the students attention while teaching them important facts and introducing them to new ways of thinking. These books make powerful introductions to art activities so that the children are creating beautiful art but also learning about the artists, diverse cultures, and history.

Your gift will help to make it possible for me to introduce my students to artists, art, and ideas that might otherwise be difficult to expose them to in a meaningful way. It is important for them to know that these artists were people just like themselves who faced difficult obstacles but overcame them to create art that has enriched us all. The greatest gift to give these children is the knowledge that there is a wonderful world waiting to be explored and enriched by them.
