My Students

My small, self-contained class for students with Autism has had to switch gears, just like the entire world, and continue their education fully online. The sad part is, they are a seniors. It is their SENIOR YEAR, a triumph for ALL students, but EVEN MORE SO for these kids! They faced obstacles that most do not. I have had the privilege to be their teacher for years, some for 9 years and others for at least 5 years.

They are working so hard with little interaction, besides virtual video calls.

Since communication and social skills are a concern for this population, it has been a bumpy road that they are learning to accomplish. No matter what, they are still trying. They complete their assignments and are remaining focused. They will make it to the finish line!

My Project

Distance learning has taught me, even more so, the importance of communication. When teaching students with autism, communication and social skills are key. The end of the school year has been one for the books and I only wish my students could have gotten the opportunity to enjoy their last days as a senior in high school. They have worked so hard and I could not have been any more proud.

Included in this wish list are items that might seem pointless, but they have meaning.

I have selected gratitude journals: so that they can reflect daily on all the good in their lives. Candy: obviously to remember to enjoy simple pleasures and all the sweetness of life. A garden kit: we have a school garden and watching them plant, tend, harvest and take care of it has been the best process of the entire school year. Sensory balls: these help calm nerves when one feels anxiety. A wooden "Jenga-like" came: to remember when life throws us something and it knocks us down, we can always get back up! A mindfulness therapy game that I hope they play with their families and have discussions that bring them together even more.

My hope for my students is to always get the best out of their educational process. Learning about English, math and science are important, but so is learning about trusting others, communicating effectively, appreciating everything and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone in order to grow.
