My students need a "What Is Grammar?" Book Set, 35 daily journals, and games to amp up their knowledge of language, as they are new to this country and its tricky grammatical rules.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever felt like the odd one out? Have you ever felt misunderstood?
Well, I have 32 wonderful students coming to me this fall that feel that way on a daily basis. They struggle with the basic rules of our language and need every advantage they can get to catch up to their native peers.
The students that make up my ESL classroom hail from Latin America and Africa; each helping to create a rich tapestry of traditions and ideas.
Our school is in an impoverished area of New York City; 99.9% of our children are able to receive free breakfast and lunch. The school does not provide paper or a copier to teachers, which makes it nearly impossible to create these journals from scratch. The students are sweet and eager to learn and become a part of their new country. Each child brings with them a fresh perspective on the world around them. I never cease to be amazed by their desire to learn.
My Project
The items included in our hope chest are all important! First, there are the journals. Each child would have their very own journal, which is such a special treat for a child. It is rare these days that children have much more than a composition book from the dollar store. Having these journals would give them a source of pride. The journals would allow them the opportunity to practice their writing skills each day independently.
The games would be used in a center setting. Each Friday the students would have the opportunity to practice their skills using the game. The games also play the vital role of building social skills, something very important in the classroom and in life.
I know it is hard in this economy to reach into our wallets for others.
Yet, I ask you to do just that. Reach in and give! Give to children deserving of supplies and an equitable education. These journals will allow them to work daily on skills that don't come easily to English language learners.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
